Engineering & EHS Manager
Location: Madison, OH
As the Engineering & Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager, you will spearhead engineering projects, oversee capital initiatives, drive continuous improvement strategies, and implement environmental, health, and safety programs across our two manufacturing facilities. This prominent leadership position plays a critical role in enhancing operational performance, refining manufacturing workflows, leading capital projects, fortifying our safety culture, and developing sustainable systems that facilitate ongoing business growth.
While environmental health and safety management is a key aspect of this role, the main emphasis will be on engineering leadership, operational efficiency, and project execution, going beyond a conventional compliance-centered EHS position. The ideal candidate should possess a balanced skill set to manage capital projects, enhance manufacturing processes, lead improvement initiatives, conduct safety audits, and collaborate with senior leadership on strategic operational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Capital Projects
- Oversee capital improvement (CAPEX) projects from the planning phase through to implementation and commissioning.
- Create project scopes, timelines, budgets, ROI analyses, and schedules.
- Manage relationships with contractors, engineering firms, equipment suppliers, and other project resources.
- Facilitate equipment installations, startup activities, and enhancements to facilities.
- Direct process engineering initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, quality, productivity, and equipment reliability.
- Diagnose manufacturing issues and equipment malfunctions while proposing long-term solutions.
- Collaborate with Operations, Quality, Technical Services, and Maintenance for new product introductions, process enhancements, and automation projects.
- Develop and maintain essential engineering documentation including SOPs, work instructions, equipment records, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
- Create and sustain a comprehensive multi-year capital improvement plan.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Lead Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement efforts across both sites.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and execute process improvements to boost productivity and minimize waste.
- Conduct investigations into root causes and develop corrective action strategies.
- Establish operational KPIs, dashboards, and performance reporting frameworks.
- Enhance workflow efficiency and interdepartmental collaboration among manufacturing, maintenance, quality assurance, and administrative teams.
- Standardize best practices to ensure consistency across both manufacturing plants.
- Support future operational scalability through process and organizational enhancements.
Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
- Lead comprehensive environmental, health, and safety initiatives at both facilities.
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA, DOT regulations, and all relevant environmental and safety standards.
- Perform safety audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analyses.
- Enact corrective and preventive measures to mitigate workplace hazards.
- Deliver safety training programs and foster employee involvement through safety committees.
- Coordinate workers’ compensation processes and return-to-work initiatives alongside Human Resources.
- Manage environmental reporting, permitting, SDS maintenance, hazard communication, and compliance inspections.
- Cultivate a proactive safety culture throughout both organizations.
Systems & Organizational Development
- Enhance and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs), operational documentation, and process standards.
- Support ERP system refinements and improvements in work order management processes.
- Elevate project management processes, reporting structures, and organizational accountability.
- Advance knowledge transfer, training protocols, and operational documentation.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Work closely with Operations leadership to implement strategic operational initiatives.
- Foster robust cross-functional relationships among Production, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Technical Services, and Leadership teams.
- Drive organizational change through technical expertise, collaboration, and ongoing improvement efforts.
- Aid in aligning processes, systems, and operational standards across both manufacturing sites.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, or EHS leadership within a manufacturing context.
- Proven experience in leading capital projects, facilitating process enhancements, and executing Lean Manufacturing strategies.
- Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, and environmental regulations.
- Experience managing engineering projects from conception to execution.
- Familiarity with root cause analysis, continuous improvement principles, and operational excellence practices.
- Outstanding project management, organizational capabilities, and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication abilities and adept in collaborating across various departments and locations.
- Experience in chemical manufacturing or process manufacturing is highly preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma.
- Experience in capital budgeting and ROI analysis.
- Understanding of process safety management (PSM) and manufacturing automation.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and metrics for manufacturing performance.
- Professional certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are advantageous.
