Position Overview for Materials Engineer
The Materials Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the aerospace sector by working alongside manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to assess metallic materials, perform metallurgical analysis, and offer technical guidance for hardware that is critical to flight and safety. This position entails involvement in failure analysis, process enhancement, material qualification, and informed engineering choices while adhering to AS9100 and other customer and regulatory standards.
Key Duties of the Materials Engineer
- Assess metallic materials and manufacturing workflows to bolster production, quality assurance, and engineering efforts.
- Carry out metallurgical evaluations, which include preparing metallographic samples, conducting microscopic analyses, performing hardness tests, and interpreting material properties.
- Explore material-related failures and production defects through root cause analysis and suggest appropriate corrective measures.
- Examine microstructures, heat treatment processes, coatings, grain sizes, inclusions, and other critical material characteristics to ensure alignment with engineering specifications.
- Compile detailed technical reports that record findings, engineering judgments, and recommendations pertinent to production approval, client validation, and engineering dispositions.
- Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) discussions, address nonconformance issues, and manage deviations, waivers, and corrective actions.
- Work collaboratively with Manufacturing, Quality, Design Engineering, and Supply Chain teams to tackle material-related challenges and enhance production methods.
- Assist in the qualification of new materials, vendors, production processes, and heat treatment techniques.
- Ensure adherence to AS9100 quality standards, customer requirements, ASTM/AMS standards, and internal engineering protocols.
- Contribute to ongoing improvement efforts aimed at enhancing material performance, manufacturing productivity, and product dependability.
Required Qualifications for the Materials Engineer
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
- Knowledge of metallurgy, material characterization, heat treatment processes, and the properties of metallic alloys.
- Familiarity with metallographic sample preparation techniques and optical microscopy.
- Understanding of engineering analysis, technical documentation, and methodologies for root cause investigations.
- Strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and effective communication capabilities.
- Capacity to work cooperatively in a cross-functional aerospace manufacturing setting.
- Prior experience in aerospace, manufacturing, or similar regulated industries is preferred.
- Knowledge of AS9100, ASTM, AMS, FAA, or NADCAP standards is advantageous.
- Experience with hardness testing, microhardness, or other materials characterization methods is a plus.
