Principal / Lead Systems Engineer

As a Principal Engineer, your role will be pivotal in steering the design engineering efforts for a niche product line that includes large inflatable military life rafts intended for both aerial and maritime use. Your technical acumen will play a vital role in driving product innovation while ensuring compliance with rigorous safety standards and business goals. This position demands a comprehensive knowledge of aerospace mechanical engineering, as well as a commitment to mentoring junior engineers and leading a dedicated Design Engineering team.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Deliver high-level design engineering guidance aligned with contract specifications or service level agreements, overseeing planning, coordination, and execution of significant contracts.
- Identify design enhancements, execute product roadmap updates, and spearhead new product initiatives.
- Administer the knowledge management system, ensuring its effectiveness and promoting knowledge sharing.
- Tackle emerging design, quality, safety, and operational challenges by investigating underlying causes and stakeholders involved.
- Formulate procedures and clarify regulatory requirements to guarantee product compliance and optimal practices while monitoring the success of product initiatives.
- Evaluate the viability of complex product and service proposals, providing insights for development, replacement, or decommissioning.
- Supervise a variety of change projects, providing updates to senior management on progress.
- Advise on enhancements to policies, processes, standards, and operational practices.
- Assess and recommend solutions that align with both business requirements and customer expectations.
- Engage in lifelong professional development to stay informed on emerging technologies, regulatory updates, and industry benchmarks.
Experience, Qualifications, and Skills
Essential Criteria:
- Proficient mechanical engineering background in the aerospace sector.
- Experience with system integration, finite element analysis, and strong mechanical competencies.
- Familiarity with product certification procedures for aviation (Military or Federal compliance).
- Solid foundation in materials science.
- Supervisory experience, ideally 2-5 years in an Engineering Lead or Middle Management position.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, with a focus on mechanical or aerospace engineering preferred.
- At least 5-10 years of relevant industry engineering experience.
Desirable:
- Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer status.
- Background in product safety protocols.
- Experience with inflatable or pressure vessel products.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes for coated textiles and films, including high-frequency and ultrasonic welding techniques.
