JOB SUMMARY: In the role of Lead Programmer, you will work alongside customers and internal teams to efficiently develop control systems, guided by a comprehensive understanding of both mechanical and electrical specifications. This position allows for significant independence, managing long-term projects with minimal oversight, while handling testing, troubleshooting, and collaborating with both technical and non-technical colleagues throughout the project lifecycle. You will engage in all aspects of the New Product Development (NPD) process, including initial design definitions, supporting production builds, generating BOMs and drawings, and providing technical assistance for new products in the field as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
· Create original programming code in structured text and/or ladder logic to control machinery involved in automated material handling systems.
· Configure HMIs and PLCs to fulfill specific automation project goals.
· Design and document products using tools like AutoCAD Electrical, EPlan, Studio 5000, among others.
· Assist or lead team members in developing owner manuals, testing protocols, and other required engineering documents.
· Update and maintain project documentation, encompassing design specifications, progress updates, and technical outputs.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conduct prototype testing and development.
· Ensure the accuracy and completeness of engineering outputs from yourself and other technical members.
· Review and verify the work of fellow technical team members.
· Perform other duties as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· This position does not entail direct supervision of staff.
· Provides technical direction and allocates work for engineering teams both on-site and in India.
· Offers consistent technical leadership to guide cross-functional peers through various stages of the NPD process.
· Often responsible for reviewing and validating the technical work produced by other team members.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
· At least 5 years of experience in PLC programming (with a focus on Allen-Bradley), HMI configurations, and SCADA systems.
· Minimum 5 years of experience in C or other structured text programming environments.
· Strong proficiency in interpreting, creating, and analyzing electrical schematics.
· Thorough understanding of Controls and Electrical Engineering principles.
· Robust analytical abilities to proactively identify and resolve project challenges.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective interaction with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
· Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
· Familiarity with package sortation, unit handling conveyor systems, or analogous products and their control systems is preferred.
· Knowledgeable in NEC, Electrical Standards for Industrial Machinery, and UL compliance regulations.
· Ability to cultivate positive and professional relationships at all organizational levels.
· Competence in resolving departmental challenges and driving continuous improvement initiatives through peer collaboration.
· Must successfully complete a 90-day probation period.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Control Systems Engineering, or a closely related field.
· 5-10 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, or control systems engineering, demonstrating proficiency in managing project timelines, scope, and alterations.
· Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical/electrical schematics and client specifications, as well as drafting routine reports and correspondence.
· Effective communication skills in English with both internal and external customers.
· Solid math skills are essential, as this role requires engineering calculations involving algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
· Skilled in using AutoCAD Electrical and/or E-Plan.
· Proficient with Rockwell Studio 5000.
· Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
TRAVEL DEMANDS:
· This position may involve occasional travel to customer locations with limited notice, including potential work on weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This job requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Employees may spend considerable time on the shop floor, which could involve lifting up to 50 lbs. Additionally, this role includes extended periods sitting at a computer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee’s role is primarily office-based, but it includes consistent interactions with shop floor personnel. Workdays are typically divided between both environments, although demands may shift towards one based on project activities. Occasional travel to client facilities or suppliers may be necessary. In such environments, employees might encounter moving mechanical components, fumes, or airborne particles. The ambient noise level varies, but in most areas, hearing protection may not be mandatory. This position is located on-site in Port Clinton, OH.
