Senior Mechanical Designer

Job Summary

The Senior Mechanical Designer is responsible for spearheading the creation of efficient, safe, and constructible mechanical designs for capital projects. This role involves supporting various projects regionally and potentially across global initiatives. Additionally, it encompasses leading project design processes, maintaining design standards, and furthering the development of CAD and 3D design tools.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the mechanical design discipline lead within project teams for large and complex initiatives.
  • Oversee mechanical design activities and ensure compliance with engineering execution processes and document control standards.
  • Generate comprehensive mechanical design packages, featuring virtual models, layout drawings, and support details.
  • Provide expert support on 3D modeling, equipment layouts, and construction coordination to project teams and engineers.
  • Design mechanical systems that meet safety, operational, maintenance, reliability, and constructability goals.
  • Detail mechanical components and interactions with other systems, ensuring clearances and access provisions are adequately modeled.
  • Guide and oversee equipment vendors and consultants involved in mechanical design.
  • Participate in field verification and reviews, assisting with installation and addressing design-related issues as necessary.
  • Develop, implement, and uphold mechanical design standards, specifications, and design tools.
  • Effectively communicate project scope, decisions, and technical challenges to various stakeholders to ensure alignment.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines for design interfacing and conduct thorough design reviews and conflict resolutions.
  • Validate existing site conditions while incorporating relevant codes and specifications into design efforts.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of mechanical drawings and models prior to release.
  • Mentor junior designers, promoting adherence to quality and design practices.

Qualifications

  • An Associate’s degree in Design, Drafting Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related fields; a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience is also acceptable.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical design.
  • Proficiency in both 2D CAD systems and 3D model-based design tools relevant to mechanical layout and detailing.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, equipment arrangements, tolerances, materials, and standards.
  • Ability to interpret and integrate process documents, specifications, and vendor data into cohesive designs.
  • Strong capability in leading design reviews and communicating technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
