Sr. Roadway Design Engineer
Locations: Raleigh, Charlotte

The role of the Sr. Roadway Design Engineer encompasses a wide range of roadway engineering projects, guiding them from initial concept to final execution. This position is responsible for designing, evaluating, and analyzing roadway systems to ensure they meet safety, operational effectiveness, and compliance with the NCDOH standards and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities of the Sr. Roadway Design Engineer:

  • Conduct analysis and design for a variety of roadway types, including new builds, expansions, and refurbishments.
  • Lead and manage roadway design and analysis initiatives in line with NCDOT regulations.
  • Examine traffic patterns to inform roadway design decisions.
  • Assess and authorize design submissions from subcontracted teams.
  • Interact with public agencies and governmental bodies to secure project approvals.
  • Draft and review technical engineering documents, including reports, schematics, and specifications.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure adherence to budget and scheduling requirements throughout the projects.
  • Perform field assessments and evaluations of current roadway conditions.
  • Identify and address any challenges arising during the construction phase.
  • Offer technical support and mentorship to junior Engineers and support staff.
  • Stay current with State DOT/DOH policies, guidelines, and industry practices.

Qualifications for the Sr. Roadway Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline;
  • Master’s degree (MSCE) is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Active P.E. licensure in North Carolina is mandatory.
  • Comprehensive experience in roadway engineering, particularly within NCDOT projects.
  • Solid understanding of NCDOT design guidelines, specifications, and procedures.
  • Expertise in roadway design software, such as Civil 3D or OpenRoad Designer.
  • Familiarity with project management tools like MS Project is advantageous.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and communication abilities.
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to producing top-quality outcomes.
