- Analyze revenue, expenditures, fund balances, and overall operating results to evaluate financial health.
- Explain variances between budgeted and actual spending to help management plan and control expenditures.
- Organize financial data and produce accurate, timely management reports to support planning and resource allocation.
- Compile technical and operational information to assist management in evaluating costs and ongoing operational needs.
- Collaborate on the preparation and monitoring of annual utility operating budgets.
- Track expenditures across utility-specific accounts.
- Compile critical financial information to back up management decisions and long-term utility planning.
- Support reliable accounting records, financial documentation, and strict expenditure controls.
- Ensure all spending and reporting strictly follow applicable internal procedures and public-sector regulatory requirements.
- Compile supporting schedules and documentation required for seamless annual audits.
- Maintain meticulous records to support utility decisions and historical financial transactions.
- Coordinate financial information seamlessly across various utility departments.
- Work closely with customer service personnel to optimize financial processes supporting public utility operations.
- Bridge communication gaps by translating complex financial metrics into clear insights for team members whose primary expertise is engineering or utility operations.
- Support accurate workflows across billing, accounting, payroll, and record-keeping systems.
- Manage competing deadlines and handle confidential administrative and operational information with discretion.
- Drive process improvements to make reporting and administrative workflows more accurate and efficient.
- Execute special projects and other administrative assignments as directed by executive management.
- Must be comfortable managing multi-fund structures and substantial capital infrastructure budgets.
- Ability to remain organized and calm under demanding budgeting and reporting deadlines.
- Capacity to successfully balance daily hands-on financial work with high-level coordination and executive management support.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Experience with public utility finances, public-sector accounting principles, and fund accounting regulations.
- Demonstrated experience working with executive management and contributing to utility-wide financial decisions.
- Strong analytical mindset with a proven background in financial analysis, variance explanation, and operational budgeting.
- Exceptional communication skills, with a specific ability to explain financial data clearly to non-financial managers and board members.
- Advanced proficiency in municipal financial software and spreadsheet modeling.
