Indirect Tax Analyst

The Indirect Tax Analyst directly reports to the Indirect Tax Manager and plays a vital role in overseeing the company’s personal property tax compliance, reporting, and audit activities across various jurisdictions, with significant decisions made under management supervision. This position is crucial for ensuring precise reporting of business assets, timely submission of returns, and the correct application of valuation and depreciation techniques, all while minimizing tax risks and adhering to relevant regulations. The analyst collaborates with the Indirect Tax Manager to enhance processes through interdepartmental teamwork and provides guidance and assistance to the Tax Administrator regarding Sales & Use Tax issues.
Responsibilities of the Indirect Tax Analyst
- Prepare, examine, and submit personal property tax returns for various states and local entities.
- Evaluate fixed asset records to pinpoint taxable personal property and relevant exemptions.
- Implement applicable depreciation schedules, valuation practices, and Situs rules.
- Ensure reconciliation of personal property tax returns with fixed assets and general ledger documentation.
- Assess accuracy of assessment notices and explore potential options for appeal or amendment.
- Support the preparation and management of personal property tax audits and assessments.
- Collaborate with external tax advisors, consultants, and local tax authorities.
- Monitor filing schedules, payment deadlines, and jurisdictional stipulations.
- Keep comprehensive and accurate records, workpapers, and asset support documents.
- Stay updated on changes in personal property tax legislation and reporting mandates.
- Provide support for inquiries related to sales and use tax.
- Assist the Indirect Tax Manager with SUT refund claims and other special projects.
Qualifications for the Indirect Tax Analyst
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; additional applicable experience may be accepted.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in personal property tax compliance or similar tax-related functions.
- Solid understanding of personal property tax legislation, asset valuation, and depreciation processes.
- Experience with tax compliance procedures is essential.
- Excellent analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including skills in pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication capabilities.
- Preferred experience includes multi-jurisdictional personal property tax filings.
- Familiarity with Personal Property Tax (PPT) and ERP software, such as S4/Hana, SAP, Oracle, PTMS, or equivalent systems is advantageous.
- Experience with personal property tax appeals is preferred.
- Knowledge in sales & use tax or property tax compliance is also preferred.
