Packaging / Materials Engineer

Iowa City, IA The Packaging / Materials Engineer is responsible for overseeing and managing the end-to-end packaging development process, from concept and design through prototype creation, validation testing, and full production implementation. This role ensures packaging solutions meet performance, cost, safety, regulatory, and supply chain requirements while supporting new product introductions and continuous improvement initiatives. Packaging / Materials Engineer Responsibilities
- Lead the complete packaging development lifecycle, including design creation, prototyping, performance validation, and production launch
- Troubleshoot new and existing packaging issues related to design, materials, and processes; deliver creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
- Review and analyze engineering drawings and product specifications to determine physical characteristics, handling needs, environmental and safety requirements, and appropriate packaging materials
- Establish supplier evaluation standards and guidelines; assess, select, and periodically review packaging suppliers and vendors
- Collaborate cross-functionally with global suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, sourcing, and manufacturing teams
- Participate in new product introduction (NPI) teams to ensure successful and timely market launches
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor efficiency, transportation, storage, and overall logistics
- Partner with Engineering and Supply Chain teams to optimize the packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer, regulatory, and internal requirements
- Specify, recommend, and utilize efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs
- Work closely with Manufacturing to ensure packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability and operational efficiency
- Ensure compliance with relevant safety, environmental, and industry regulations and standards
Packaging / Materials Engineer Qualifications
- 7-10 years of relevant experience
- Knowledge of packaging materials, testing methods, and manufacturing processes
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and global team environments
- Experience with supplier management and cost-reduction initiatives is preferred
