Patient Support Specialist

$19.50 – $20/ HR A Patient Support Specialist serves as a key point of contact for patients and visitors throughout their healthcare journey. This role ensures efficient, compassionate service while supporting accurate registration, scheduling, billing processes, and compliance standards.
Patient Support Specialist Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional customer service to patients and visitors in person, by phone, and through digital channels
- Professionally investigate, triage, and resolve patient concerns using established service recovery models
- Create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment aligned with expected service behaviors
- Proactively assist patients in waiting areas by greeting, engaging, resolving concerns, and providing service recovery
- Perform patient registration, appointment scheduling, pre-visit preparation, arrival and departure desk functions
- Verify insurance, collect co-pays, and manage point-of-service financial transactions accurately
- Maintain confidential, accurate patient demographic, insurance, billing, and payment information
- Support billing workflows while meeting compliance, quality, and productivity standards
- Encourage and assist patients with front-end technology and patient portal utilization through education and hands-on support
- Support caregivers and providers with front-end technology use and troubleshooting
- Recruit, enroll, and educate patients on patient portals and digital appointment tools
- Process daily workflows and manage scheduling changes, including provider reschedules
- Perform telephone triage and follow established phone etiquette and service standards
- Coordinate interpreter services and support patient communication needs
- Relay internal staff communications and messages as needed
- Collaborate effectively with clinical staff, including providers, nurses, and support teams
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and organizational projects
- Support patient outreach activities such as proactive calls for care compliance and health maintenance
- Adhere to all compliance policies, procedures, and privacy standards
- Perform other duties as assigned
Patient Support Specialist Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Ability to perform basic math for insurance co-pay processing
- Working knowledge of PC and Windows-based applications
- Ability to input, retrieve, and maintain accurate electronic records
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic technology issues in collaboration with others
- Typing ability of at least 30 words per minute or demonstrated keyboard proficiency preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Strong commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality patient service
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to engage a diverse patient population
- High level of customer service experience and strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in sensitive or high-stress situations
- Interest in learning and adapting to new technology, processes, and workflows
- Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret medical insurance information
- Strong critical thinking, judgment, and independent problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask and shift priorities in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Dexterity sufficient to operate computers and standard office equipment
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods
- Visual acuity sufficient for computer and detail-oriented work
- Ability to navigate multiple locations in a busy environment
- Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds
