Overview of the Machinist Role
The Machinist plays a crucial role in the advanced setup, operation, and troubleshooting of machining tools and equipment. This position requires the ability to independently tackle non-routine challenges, maintain high standards of quality and efficiency, and pinpoint areas for process enhancements that can improve cost, delivery, and overall performance. Additionally, this role contributes to team growth and may involve mentoring other machinists.
Key Responsibilities of the Machinist
- Safely and effectively set up, operate, and troubleshoot machining equipment.
- Conduct machine start-up, shutdown, and material loading procedures.
- Perform tooling and fixture modifications, adjustments, and setups.
- Visually and dimensionally inspect parts to ensure they meet quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and production logs.
- Identify and report any machine issues and part discrepancies.
- Set tooling and carry out preventative maintenance tasks.
- Adjust machining parameters such as speeds and feeds as necessary.
- Resolve issues related to setup, tooling, and product non-conformance.
- Diagnose and address program alarm notifications.
- Propose and facilitate improvements in processes and scheduling.
- Mentor and help develop less experienced colleagues.
- Modify part programs and provide assistance with equipment repairs when required.
Qualifications for the Machinist Position
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- In-depth knowledge of machining techniques, equipment, and tools.
- Strong capabilities in troubleshooting and resolving problems.
- Self-driven individual with the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
- Clear and effective communication skills.
- Experience with operating machining equipment, including loading and unloading parts and conducting inspections.
- Skilled with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, comparators, gauges).
- Ability to recognize and rectify tooling and machining problems (such as tool holders, collets, chucks, etc.).
- Capable of diagnosing and fixing minor mechanical equipment issues.
