Senior Business Development Manager
Location: St. Louis, MO (hybrid)
Salary: $140,000-$170,000
The Senior Business Development Manager will collaborate with various Practice Groups, Industry Teams, cross-departmental functions, and firm leadership to formulate and execute business development strategies aimed at enhancing revenue for the Corporate Practice Group and associated Industry Groups. This role encompasses strategic planning, tactical execution in line with strategic objectives, budget management, as well as identifying, tracking, and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs). After completing the onboarding phase, this position will have the option for hybrid work. The suitable candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to firm leaders, crafting business development strategies for their designated portfolio and supervising the implementation of those strategies.
Key Responsibilities for Senior Business Development Manager:
- Oversee and manage a portfolio for the Corporate Practice Group and various industry sectors, acting as the main liaison for the Marketing and Business Development department.
- Make autonomous decisions in collaboration with Practice Group and Industry Team Leaders, the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer (CMBDO), and other executive leaders within the firm.
- Partner with the CMBDO and a fellow Business Development Manager on broader firm initiatives and represent leadership in functions and presentations, as required.
- Collaborate with leadership to assess the performance of Practice Groups, including the activities of individual attorneys.
- Lead key client teams within assigned groups, working closely with Client Relationship Leaders (CRLs) to formulate and implement business development strategies aimed at achieving revenue targets.
- Potentially oversee and mentor Business Development Coordinators (BDCs) on portfolio tasks and guide the strategic direction for their assigned groups.
- Outline business development campaigns, define tactics, set timelines, and establish KPIs to ensure accountability for execution and results.
- Oversee the development and strategic approach for complex RFP submissions and new business presentations, coordinating with pricing to secure profitable engagements.
- Engage with the Marketing Department and various teams including Finance, Information Technology, Diversity, BELONG, Pricing, Project Management, and Professional Development to promote continuous improvement and profitability initiatives.
- Coordinate closely with assigned Practice Group Leaders (PGLs) to lead PG meetings and business development programs.
- Analyze and present insights on legal industry trends, client feedback, developments within practice groups, and market opportunities to enhance awareness and outreach efforts.
- Provide ongoing coaching and guidance to direct reports, delivering constructive feedback to promote their professional development and skill enhancement.
Qualifications for Senior Business Development Manager:
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required; a background in business, marketing, communications, or a related field is preferred.
- At least 8 years of prior experience in a B2B professional services environment.
- Experience within Am Law 200 firms is highly desirable.
- Strong skills in strategic planning, critical thinking, and problem-solving, complemented by a solutions-oriented approach.
- Demonstrated leadership capability, combined with initiative, intellectual curiosity, and a self-motivated nature.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, along with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all organizational levels, including senior management, attorneys, and business professionals.
- Well-organized with robust project management and negotiation skills and the capacity to juggle multiple responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
- Willingness to work beyond 40 hours weekly and travel as required within the firm’s geographical scope. Occasional weekend and overnight travel may be necessary.
- Expected travel is moderate, estimated at 10-15%.
